Each fragment comes from its respective hand drawn noir comix edited and produced by BeccoGiallo. The themes on which the fragments are based are:

• The death of Pierpaolo Pasolini
• Pollution in Marghera
• The killing of Peppino Impastato
• The Ustica plane crash
• The bombing in Bologna train station

These animations are projected during a live, itinerary, theatrical show from Piccola Bottega Baltazar, across italy. The first two dates are:

• Bolzano 21/09/2009
• Padova 25/09/2009

The challenge was to extrapolate an animation from a single still image coming from a hand drawn plate. I have been simply given scanned plates for each fragment and had full creativity for the final work. The drawback was the deadline: 5 days.

The bulk of the work were ~5000 frames to be done in such timeframe. For 2 pieces I used the procedural capabilities of Houdini and rendered all with Mantra, while for the remaining 3 pieces I relied on the 3D compositing capabilities of Nuke. Since time was an issue, rendertime was never over 10 frames per second, and resolution was 720p.

After seeing Duncan’s Siggraph presentation, “Fun with Maya”, I simply couldn’t resist to make one of his examples with 3Delight, result is pure perfection quality, excellent speed and 1:1 match with Maya and mr (actually it even looks better :) ). The scene is very simple: put a sphere in a sphere, make shaders’s specular over 100% (photo-surrealism), recursively raytrace, and voila’. This was just a shameless copy, I will make more interesting ones in the next days.

Since from a singular entity we evolved into a group (an organization) we have changed our main address to www.jupiter-jazz.org, now jupiter-jazz.com redirects to it (and soon it will be forwarded to).
